English Language Arts
Our district uses a reading series called Reading Street. Components include whole group, small group, and individualized practice. Language arts instruction include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Literacy work stations engage students in these activities while I work with small, leveled reading groups.
Guided reading lessons allow direct instruction at the student's current skill level. Your child may bring books home so they can share their reading progress with you! They will be proud to show you what they can do!
Students have the opportunity to go to the library during the morning language arts block.
Students will receive direct writing instruction during daily writers workshop. There will be a mini-lesson each day, time to write with individual and small group support, sharing time and publishing. Writing genre will include narrative, informative, and opinion instruction. We will celebrate our great writing with special sharing events!
Our handwriting program is Handwriting Without Tears. We will practice letters each day. You can help at home by reinforcing the correct letter formation and helping your child write his/her name with a capital letter followed by lowercase letters.
