First Trimester
Science
Me As a Scientist Students will learn to use their five senses to help me learn about my world. They will use magnifying classes, practice using descriptive words in science, and practice making illustrations to show what they are learning in science. Space Systems: Patterns and Cycles Goals: Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted. Make observations at different times of year to relate the amount of daylight to the time of year. Characteristics of Fall As seasons change, students will learn about changes in the weather, behavior of animals and people, and changes in plant life. Social Studies/Health Focus on Families Students will discuss similarities and differences in families, family celebrations, rules, and important information like addresses and phone numbers. Constitution Day Students will have a brief introduction to the Constitution on Constitution Day. (Sept. 17) Rules and Safety Students will learn the importance of school and home rules and the reasons for these rules. School and classroom procedures and routines will be taught and practiced to help children understand how these expectations enable us to be productive learners. We'll also learn about fire safety in class and from Lawrence firefighters. They will visit in October. Second Trimester
Science
Light and Sound Waves Goals: ~Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. ~Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that objects can be seen only when illuminated. ~Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light. ~Use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance. Social Studies/Health Kansas History, Elections, Winter Celebrations, Needs and Wants Third Trimester
Science
Plants Goals: ~Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs. ~Read texts and use media to determine patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive. ~Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.
